2007
ARIAS HIGHLIGHTS |

The 21st year of the ARIA Awards, the excitement
began on the red carpet with Ricki Lee and
her dancers
strutting their stuff
performing her hit
Can't Touch It.
The Veronicas soon after
performed their hit single, Hook Me Up.
Hamish and Andy, Video Hits
team Fuzzy and Nathan Sapsford and
Australian Idol presenter
James Mathison
all assisted with various televised interviews on
the day.
The celebrities start arriving in their limos,
several being nominated for at least one ARIA Award.
One 2007 ARIA nominee, Sarah Blasko says she
comes to the Awards for the fun and is “not
competitive”. Later she deservedly won the 2007
ARIA for Best Pop Release.
The first ARIA Awards on the night were for the
Highest Selling Single, won by the amazing
Silverchair and the Highest Selling Album
went to last year’s Australian Idol winner,
Damien Leith. Both Awards were given out even
before the ARIA Awards ceremony began. |

Silverchair
kicked off the night’s Awards with performing their
multi ARIA Award single Straight Line. Soon
after, presenter
Rove McManus and musician
Missy Higgins performed an amusing quick dance
while discussing how small they both looked compared
to the ARIA screen listing the nominees for Best
Breakthrough Artist – Single. This award was
then presented to Gold Coast band Operator
Please. Amazingly Operator Please has an
average band members’ age of only sixteen.
Club and dance music band, Sneaky Sound System soon
followed with the band’s first ARIA for
Breakthrough Artist – Album with their debut
self-title album. Ironically Sneaky Sound System
became an Independent Label because no record
company was willing to release any of their music.
This remarkable and entertaining band was the next
to perform live, performing hit single –
Pictures.
Supermodel Megan Gale presented the Best Country
Album to
Keith Urban for his album
Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing. Other
Awards were given out throughout the night and then
it was the John Butler Trio’s turn for
Best Independence Release having won this
category twice before. John Butler made a
wonderful speech beginning with an acknowledgment of
“the traditional owners of this land” referring to
the Aborigines and stated his “full respect to those
people of that community”.

Another ‘community’ that Butler is proud of is the music
industry: “I’m extremely honoured to be part of this
community … I’m absolutely really honoured to be
amongst such an amazing diverse, unique community,
and a community that actually has a conscious and is
aware of the impact that it can make in this
world”.
In his speech,
Butler made references to the contributions of
Missy Higgins, the work that the Hilltop
Hoods do with youth, Zavier Rudd’s work
within the indigenous communities and Blue King
Brown. John continued with recognising
Powderfinger and Silverchair for their
work with ‘Reconciliation
Australia’.
Butler finished his speech by saying, “All those
things I’m really proud to be amongst you guys in
making this place a better place, ‘Peace, Respect
and Love’”.

Next performance was by the unique
Kate Miller-Heidke
performing Little Eve followed by further
deserving awards. Then the incredible
Powderfinger lit up the stage with their
performance of Lost and Running accompanied
by the Sydney Gospel Choir.
Further awards followed then the Devinyls'
Chrissy Amphlett & Mark McEntee presented the
Best Rock album to Silverchair. The
next live performance was by the 2007 ARIA Best
Female Artist winner Missy Higgins.
More live performances followed by new comers, the
2007 ARIA
Breakthrough Artist – Single winners Operator Please
and Gotye, who later won the 2007 ARIA for
Best Male Artist. Gotye accepted this
award without his shoes explaining he had not had
the chance to put his shoes back on after his
performance, which included playing the drums.
Of all the astonishing performances, the highlight
of the night was definitely the
John Butler Trio’s extraordinary hot act with Keith Urban. Some of finest
guitar work ever seen with a mixture of artistic
professionalism combined with a miraculous jam style
session between
Butler
and Urban that gained a standing ovation from the
audience.

Legendary, controversial and versatile
Nick Cave was
inducted into the 2007 ARIA Hall Of Fame and “with the power
vested” in him, he also inducted his previous band members of the
Bad Seeds for their contribution of making “authentic Australian
music”; and fellow band members of Birthday Party for the
band’s “untold influence over music in Australia and
internationally”.
The two final awards for the night comprised of the
Single of the Year being awarded to Silverchair. The
band returned to their seats after accepting that award only to be
recalled almost immediately back to the stage to accept the 2007
ARIA Award for Album of the Year. Silverchair has now
won a total of nineteen ARIA awards to date and is the only
Australian Band to have five number one albums. Certainly well
deserved accolades for such an immensely successful band.
