Audrey
Hepburn would be proud. Audrey’s Adelaide-based namesakes The Audreys have garnered widespread acclaim during their short time on the blues and roots scene, collecting fans from all over the globe. Winning the 2006 ARIA Award for Best Blues and Roots album, The Audreys consist of Taasha Coates (lead vocals, melodica, harmonica, and ukulele), Tristan Goodall (reso-phonic, acoustic and electric guitars, banjo), Mikey G (violin, lap steel guitar, harmonies), Lyndon Gray (double bass, harmonies) and Toby Lang (drums, harmonies).

The Audreys managed to snatch the ARIA on their first ever nomination, competing with Bernard Fanning, Xavier Rudd, Lior and The Flood.  “It was very surreal,” says Taasha about winning the award.  “When we won I spent about an hour going ‘pinch me’… it was really strange.  I was assuming [Bernard Fanning] was going to win of course, and I was going to go up and make some dumb crack about being in the same category. But then it was even more potent when we won it because I was going to go up and say ‘I’m so sorry Bernard, you know...’” she says jokingly.  Taasha regrettably did not get a chance to actually meet Bernard Fanning, “I really have a lot of respect for him as a musician, I really did want to meet him and I didn’t get to”.

Several months have passed since The Audreys won the ARIA award and Taasha confesses the band is still coming to grips with being nominated and then actually winning it.  “I think I still have little moments,” she says.  “My family flew over from Adelaide…it was just a fun weekend in Sydney, and they wanted to come along to the ARIAS. None of us ever talked about the possibility of us winning…it was never part of the plan or entered the conversation.  So it just ended up becoming this incredible, bonding, amazing experience, for me and my family.”

Taasha notes that her family has always encouraged her passion for music.  “A lot of musicians struggle for many years, and you need a lot of support from your family,” she says.   “When I left school, music has always been my thing. So my family have been really supportive, despite that most of the time I’ve had to borrow rent off them, and go around and eat meals every night because I have no money. So for something like winning an ARIA award to happen, a real recognition for my hard work, it was really great.”

The Audreys also have a record deal with True North Records in Canada.  Previously, this company has assisted the band getting some festival bills in
Canada.  “We love Canada, and they are friendly like Australians,” comments Taasha.

During the band’s Canadian appearances, The Audreys were surprised by the audience’s reaction.  “They are very attentive…they come and sit down and are really quiet and listen to everything.  The first few shows we freaked out, of course, because Australian audiences are so rowdy. We thought they hated us, so we tried to do more and more, and got sillier and sillier trying to get their attention.  Then we realised that when they’re quiet that they actually love it.  So it was a bit of a learning experience,” she explains.

Having two types of audiences, the band sees the advantage of both.  “We are not a big rocky band…we are the sort of band that you can just listen to, which is nice.  But when later in the Festival when people are having a really good time, I’m really into that as well.  It’s a real mood thing. We’ve done more folk shows where people just come and sit down and are very quiet, sometimes you want to go ‘come on guys’ are you having fun or what?” laughs Taasha.

The charity related organisations Taasha supports are summed up in her own words "“As a vegetarian, I am a big supporter of animal rights [such as the] RSPCA, WSPCA” .
