three letter word - EP Reviews

'three letter word' album cover.   THREE LETTER WORD – self tilted EP

This album demonstrates many well written ballad style songs.  The band has proven strong pair of song writers (Mel and Duck).  Instrumentation music is solid with glorious guitar work and great sounds of the drums.

Stuff you (Mel)

A sarcastic song written about a bad experience of unfair and unjust treatment.  Mel was the victim of this bad experience which was out of her control.  Mel wanted to write an angry song about this experience, but she also wanted somehow to be able to laugh about it as well.

‘Stuff you’ is a first-class rocking song with soft melodies and a catchy chorus.  You can hear the vocals fluctuate from sweet to being fed up.

Breathe (Mel)

This song is about longing for love while keeping in mind that love can come in many different forms.  This particular song is more about spiritual love.

‘Breathe’ is a pretty song with soft rock melodies.

Stay (Mel)

The lyrics do not reflect a personal experience but are an expression of Mel's imagination, including her visions and dreams.

‘Stay’ is a slow ballad and maintains similar beat throughout the song.  It captures soft instrumental guitar work and soft beats of the drums.

Feel It (Mel)

Basically this is a sarcastic song about lust and the things it can cause you do.

‘Feel it’ presents a enjoyable mixture between funk and softer rock beat.

So Unreal (Mel and Duck)

The band can totally relax and get lost in this song.  It exhibits a more kickback quality and it was basically written about “the eternal search for truth,” explains Mel.

‘So Unreal’ displays Mel’s relaxed manner, yet strong vocals are evident.   This song is a slow paced cruisy song with a bluesy feel about it.  There are periods of electrifying guitar work and excellent drum beats.

I don’t want to (Mel)

This powerful song presents the proposition that when you do not want to hurt someone, so you go out of your way not to hurt them, but instead you end up hurting them even more than ever.

The song is another ballad style with the track building in intensity, reaching a exciting climax.  Mel’s strong vocals are crystal clear.

'three letter word' Therapy EP album cover.   Therapy-EP

This EP represents a collection of all the songs that the band especially liked and recorded on an EP.  It is rockier than their self titled EP.  ‘Therapy’ EP indicates a belief that society has a warped view of what people should do, what they should say, how they should look, what they believe and so on.  It also expresses the view that the media is priming young people so that they will think and act in a certain way.

The EP cover photo has Duck wearing the straight jacket, Mel covered in red tape, and Louise is surrounded and locked in chains.  The picture represents a view of modern society.  As Duck says, “You can try all you want to be yourself but society keeps putting certain constraints (‘chains’) on you such as the ‘red tape’ from all the government or legal stuff that you have to do these days, and the ‘straight jacket’ is representing you having to be a certain way.”  The EP portrays electrifying guitar work and energetic drums.  In general the EP is aimed to show how the band would sound live.

Therapy (title song) (Duck & Mel)

Angry song but also has sweet vocals to offset the anger.  However, it is the anger that is the driving theme that ties everything together.  “You can have your integrity and be sweet about it and be forgiving, but at the same time it does not mean you have to forget, and it doesn’t mean that you can’t be angry,” says Mel.

The song is about other people thinking they know better than you about how you should live your life.   So the thought that ‘maybe you're the one who needs therapy’ is more about the people who can sit here and tell you how you should think.  Duck says, “Maybe they need to look at the way they live their own lives, and maybe they need to question their own opinions and what they think”.

Therapy’ has a Led Zeplin type start with slow guitar work, a little intense but then it gets really rocking. Mel’s soaring vocals are evident.  The line that Duck sings, 'Thanks for all you said about me, maybe you’re the one who needs therapy' is the part I feel that punk lovers would get into. But the punk style is only slightly evident compared to the rest of the song.  This song displays contradictions of styles throughout.  From hard-charging dynamic rock to lush ballad melodies, the words ‘You don’t know what it's like to walk in my shoes’, ‘falling apart’ and ‘pushing me down’ all adds to the variation of styles.

RU still there (Mel)

Mel had a dream about a woman was looking into a mirror.  All this women could see was her face with her makeup running.  But in reality on her face the makeup was fine.  This song represents drug abuse and parts suggest a wish to escape from reality.

‘RU still there’ has more of a boppy tune and beat.  First-rate back up vocals are evidence.  Evidence of great guitar work and energetic drum beat.

Haunted (Duck)

Another spiritual song where in various parts has more dynamics than the other songs.  It captures a mood of the way society and world events can affect you.

‘Haunted’ has skilful lyrics about 'being haunted by your ways'.  It has a slower pace than the other three songs but it still maintain a good quality beat.  This song presents some solo periods of lively guitar work.

Text me (Duck)

This song shows how technology is allowing people to take short-cuts with communication and how easily people can get out of actually talking to each other.

This song’s melody and lyrics are very catchy with a constant rock beat.  The song is a upbeat song and it has some softer melodies.  The band enjoys performing this song and joking around on stage pretending they are rock stars.
