Chris Hethorn generously gave up his
energy, time, and restaurant/club to host this event. Hethorn’s
involvement with WaterAid began one month ago when he was
introduced to WaterAid fundraiser Rowan Barber. “Rowan
asked for some help with his mission and I very happily said
yes and said I would be so honoured to be part of your work,
let me do some stuff!” explains Chris. So the night
eventuated and what a night it was!
International band the Bodysnatchers, local bands, DJs
including LolaLovesAcid, all assisted in getting the barsoma party going. In
addition to the music, WaterAid featured auctions for
fundraising, fashion parades along with great food and a lot
of fun. All participants contributed their time for free. |

Local band, Mr Hands known for their traditional swing and
1940s and 50s Latin compositions got people grooving. The
band agreed that WaterAid was a worthy cause to participate
in.
Channel Nine’s National News journalist Sarah Harris, and
Weather presenter Joseph May were the auctioneers. While
auctioning items, Sarah had no qualms taking bids for
auctioning the shirt off Joseph’s back! Both also assisted
Chris to host the fashion parades.

“We heard about WaterAid and were keen to get involved,”
says Joseph. Sarah adds, “When we both heard about WaterAid, we thought
this is such a fantastic cause, the water that these people
are drinking in
Third
World countries could literally kill them. So for a bloke
like Rowan to go out there and put his hard work in
developing and helping countries help themselves, it’s an
amazing thing to get behind”.
Joseph comments, “I think it is always good to see young
professionals giving back a little bit and the crowd tonight
is a heavy mix of different people around
Brisbane,
but I guess the common cause is that we do like to give
something back, if you can spare your time and your money,
hopefully”.

Among those young professionals attending was medical
engineering student and member of Engineers Without
Borders Ac Kushnir, who enjoyed the night. Engineers
Without Borders were one of the many organisations
supporting the event. Both WaterAid and Engineers share
goals of dedicating in helping
disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life
through the education and implementation of sustainable
engineering projects.
After the success of their first event, Chris and Rowan are gearing up for another WaterAid party. “The funds that were
raised in August are going towards even a bigger event
live wateraid @ barsoma,”
says Chris. This event will be part of the
Valley Fiesta weekend from 15 - 17 September 2006. “I am
pulling together some of the best sounds of Brissy for a
weekend of true frivolity for a great cause,”
Chris advises enthusiastically. |

If the event in August is a taste of what is to be
expected, the Valley Fiesta
wateraid @ barsoma
will be a great event and definitely should not be missed. |
